During the transportation process, UMH teams are in constant communication with the transfer service, before meeting the helicopter right on the pad so that care can begin immediately.
As the only university-owned and -operated teaching hospital in Florida, UMH is able to provide leading-edge care that reflects the latest research and provides direct access to the University of Miami Miller School of Medicine’s clinical trials. In addition to allowing the seamless transport of patients from other facilities, the UMH helipad also serves as a drop-off point for critical medical supplies and key personnel in times of need.
The UMH helipad transfer service is not for trauma cases, but for patients who need immediate specialty care in various disciplines and cannot wait for traditional road transportation. These include cardiothoracic surgery; interventional cardiology procedures; non-trauma neurosurgery; non-trauma orthopaedics and sports medicine; stroke; and intensive medicine expertise in general surgery, general medicine, neurosurgery, and cardiology.
“The UMH helipad serves to expand access to UHealth academic medicine across the region including the Americas and the Caribbean,” said Dan Snyder, CEO of the University of Miami Hospital.
Pascal J. Goldschmidt, M.D., senior vice president for medical affairs at the University of Miami and dean of the university’s Leonard M. Miller School of Medicine, said , “We are providing another point of entry for patients across the region to access our research-centered care and clinical trials.”
Goldschmidt notes that trauma cases will still be sent to the University of Miami/Jackson Memorial Hospital’s Ryder Trauma Center.
“We continue to work with our partners at Jackson in providing the only Level 1 trauma care in Miami-Dade,” he said.
