The winds of change began last year in Korea's medical community. From January to Novemner of 2009, the number of international medical tourists flocking to Korea increased by 40,000 from the previous year, and that doesn't even take into account the entire month of December.
So, what caused this change? It was a law allowing Korean hospitals to market to international patients that was firmly in place by May 2009. Now, Korean medical centers can partner with travel agencies, increasing their international scope tremendously. This also helps to build credibility, as many who have never traveled abroad for medical treatment, or ever, find comfort in travel agencies, or facilitators, and take their recommendations to heart.
The major change: Medical tourists are now traveling to Korea for more than just superficial reasons, they are traveling for cancer treatments, medically-required surgeries and treatment of heart disease, to name a few. This is exciting news for Korea's medical community and for international patients seeking quality care at a fraction of the cost.
