In the Beginning
More than twenty-seven years ago, Dr. Patrick Tonnard founded the Coupure Centre for Plastic Surgery in Ghent, Belgium, following extensive and specialized training in plastic and reconstructive surgery. His vision was to create a private, patient-centered environment where excellence, safety, and artistry come together to produce the highest standards in aesthetic outcomes.
From the beginning, Dr. Tonnard’s goal has been to offer patients a unique surgical experience—one defined by precision, innovation, and compassion. His dream quickly became a reality, and year after year, he continues to refine his craft and redefine the field of aesthetic surgery.
A Legacy of Collaboration and Innovation
Early in his career, Dr. Tonnard collaborated with Dr. Alexis Verpaele, a respected colleague and fellow innovator. Together, they developed techniques that would change the landscape of facial rejuvenation, most notably the MACS-Lift and Nanofat technology.
While this collaboration contributed greatly to advancing modern plastic surgery, the Coupure Centre for Plastic Surgery remains under the direction and vision of Dr. Patrick Tonnard, whose leadership and expertise have made it a reference point for surgeons and patients worldwide.
A Game-Changing Discovery in Facial Rejuvenation
Through years of research and surgical practice, Dr. Tonnard discovered that using adipose tissue (fat harvested from the patient’s own body) in conjunction with facial surgery significantly enhances results—producing faster healing, minimal scarring, and visibly improved skin texture.
This approach, now known as Nanofat technology, utilizes the regenerative properties of fat-derived stem cells to restore youthful quality to the skin. The innovation sparked global recognition and brought hundreds of surgeons from around the world to Ghent for specialized training under Dr. Tonnard’s mentorship.
Today, Nanofat rejuvenation is considered one of the most important advancements in aesthetic medicine, and Dr. Tonnard is internationally acknowledged as the founder of the Nanofat concept.
The MACS-Lift: A Revolutionary Facelift Technique
In 1999, Dr. Tonnard introduced the MACS-Lift (Minimal Access Cranial Suspension Lift)—a refined, minimally invasive facelift that redefined surgical rejuvenation.
Developed at the Coupure Centre for Plastic Surgery, this technique offers patients a natural, youthful appearance while avoiding the extensive scars and risks of traditional facelifts. It provides vertical lifting of sagging tissue through small incisions, resulting in elegant, lasting outcomes.
The Key Benefits of the MACS-Lift Include:
- Natural and harmonious facial rejuvenation
- Reduced surgical risk with minimal side effects
- Faster recovery and minimal downtime
- Long-term, sustainable results
Today, the MACS-Lift remains one of the most sought-after facial rejuvenation procedures in Europe, synonymous with Dr. Tonnard’s name and expertise.
A Private Surgical Facility
In 2008, Dr. Tonnard established a private aesthetic medical facility in St-Martens-Latem, located just twenty minutes outside Ghent. This clinic was designed to ensure complete privacy and comfort for patients, combining advanced surgical technology with a tranquil, discreet environment.
The facility features state-of-the-art operating theatres and a dedicated recovery area that adheres to the highest standards of cleanliness and precision. Every detail is overseen personally by Dr. Tonnard and his team to ensure an unparalleled level of care.

Boutique Overnight Care
For the utmost comfort and safety, patients may recover in the clinic’s private boutique-style overnight suites, located directly above the surgical theatre. Each suite provides a calm, supportive setting where patients are attended by a licensed physician and dedicated nurse throughout the night.
This personalized recovery experience allows patients to rest in privacy and security, ensuring a smooth transition from surgery to post-operative care.
A Philosophy of Natural Results
Dr. Tonnard’s philosophy is grounded in the belief that true aesthetic excellence lies in subtlety and natural balance. His goal is for patients to look rejuvenated, not altered—refreshed, healthy, and confident without visible signs of surgery.
Family and friends may remark on how well a patient looks, but they will not recognize that a surgical procedure has been performed. This refined and understated result is the hallmark of Dr. Tonnard’s surgical artistry.
Research, Education, and Mentorship
Beyond his surgical practice, Dr. Patrick Tonnard is deeply committed to advancing the field of aesthetic surgery through scientific research and education. He has authored four medical textbooks and more than 100 peer-reviewed publications in international journals.
He regularly lectures at major international symposiums and serves as a mentor to surgeons worldwide who seek to refine their skills and adopt innovative surgical methods. His ongoing research focuses on the regenerative properties of stem cells in fat tissue transplantation and the continued development of Nanofat-based treatments.
Humanitarian Commitment
In addition to his professional achievements, Dr. Tonnard is dedicated to humanitarian causes. As co-founder of the non-profit organization See & Smile, he has led more than twenty surgical missions to Myanmar, performing life-changing reconstructive procedures for children and adults suffering from cleft lip and palate deformities.
Through this work, over 2,000 patients have received treatment, transforming lives and restoring hope. This enduring commitment to service reflects Dr. Tonnard’s belief that surgical skill should be used not only for beauty but also for compassion.
Education and Credentials
Dr. Patrick Tonnard earned his medical doctorate with the highest distinction from Ghent University and completed specialized training in plastic surgery under Professor Guido Matton.
He pursued advanced studies in facial surgery under Professor Fernando Ortiz Monasterio in Mexico City, in breast surgery under Dr. Pat Maxwell in Nashville, and in nasal surgery under Dr. Gary Burget in Chicago.
